Hamilton suffers heavy crash during German GP qualifying

Lewis Hamilton has escaped an accident during qualifying for the German GP unscathed.

Championship contender Lewis Hamilton lost the brakes during Q1 at Hockenheim, resulting in a vicious impact with the tire barrier in the 13th turn.

The session was immediately red flagged with just under eight minuntes remaining. Hamilton, breathing heavily, radioed back to his crew "I'm OK…. I hit the brakes and the brakes failed."

He posted a time before the accident that was good enough to put him into Q2. Mercedes reported that he was released from the medical center after about 10 minutes and is sore, but otherwise okay. They also confirmed that the wreck was caused by a RF brake failure.

Hamilton later told reporters that he he was fine, but also added that even if something was broken, he would still race tomorrow. He also said that Nico 'basically got another gift.'
