Hamilton paid a visit to his former team during the Malaysian Grand Prix

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton should receive a year-end reward for the most unusual “moment of the year” award; if there was one to hand out.

While much has been said about team issues on track, in pit lane, and displeased teammates, the visit to the McLaren team pits by their former driver was short-lived but left many enjoying the comical moment.

Lewis Hamilton dived into the wrong pit box for his Pirelli tyre change, and ended up paying a very temporary visit with his former team. It did bring out chuckles from those at the Sepang circuit, and from those sitting in front of their televisions or via the live internet feeds.

At the time the McLaren crew were at first shocked, and no doubt so was the Briton. However, all recovered with the McLaren guys waving a fond hello at the same time, the 2008 Formula One World Champion realized his error.

Fortunately his former teammate Jenson Button had not arrived for his pit stop and Hamilton’s area was just down a few stalls so he did not have to return to the track and waste more time.

The one with the shock look was his girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger – no doubt wondering what Hamilton was doing. So did Button who arrived in time to view the strange incident as Hamilton was exiting to head to where his Mercedes team was waiting for him while Button was entering his area for fresh tyres.

No doubt Button had one heck of a smile inside his helmet as his team went to work to get him back out on track.

The visit to his former team was brief and and did not hurt Hamilton in the long run as he went on to finish third with his new teammate Nico Rosberg close behind in fourth. "That was a fantastic job by the team today. They worked so hard over the winter and to achieve a podium at the second race of the season is a nice reward."

Indeed the team does deserve the praise! Perhaps Hamilton will need to practice stops to ensure he knows where is own garage is located for the future grand prix events.
