Reigning world champion returns to the cockpit, as his teammate cries off sick this time.
Lewis Hamilton was surprised but happy to jump back into the cockpit of the new Mercedes W06 at Barcelona today, only 24 hours after he was forced out of it and into his sickbed with a fever.
A croaky-sounding Hamilton completed 89 laps to go fifth fastest on day two at Barcelona, which marks the halfway point of pre-season F1 testing. He replaced Nico Rosberg at lunchtime, who suffered a neck problem.
"I've had better days. That's why I'm wearing the [sun]glasses – it looks like I've had a few late nights!" he quipped. "I miss driving, so I wanted to get in."
Good to get some laps in
Hamilton was surprised to get the chance to drive, as Nico Rosberg was forced out with neck trouble.
"I've never really seen that in F1, or even coming up through the ranks, I've never seen both teammates have issues, but it's been good today to get some laps in," he added.
"I don't know where we stand in comparison to others. I think others have taken a good step, so I guess time will tell.
"We're just focusing on our own job, any creases we try to iron them out and get lots of mileage on the car. The car feels good, similar to last year but better.
"We had a few problems yesterday. I don't even know where everyone else was today, doing the best job we can to maximize the opportunity of the days we have."
