Hamilton capitalizes on mistake by Rosberg to win the Italian GP

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton managed to convert his pole position into race victory as he crossed the finish line and became the winner of the FIA Formula One 2014 Italian Grand Prix today. He overcame a poor start to claim his sixth victory of the season in Italy and the 28th of his career, surpassing Jackie Stewart on the all-time wins list.

Opening stages and mistakes by Rosberg

Hamilton dropped down to fourth position early as Nico Rosberg rocketed away, but the Englishman got back on track and was closing in on his teammate partway through the event. Rosberg held station at the front of the pack for the first 30 laps, but two mistakes in the first chicane cost him the lead and any chance of staging a fight with Hamilton.

Felipe Massa earns first podium result of 2014

Williams’ Felipe Massa improved on his qualifying position by one place, as he finished the race in third place to secure the final spot on the podium. The Brazilian driver’s race result today means that he has now picked up his first podium finish of the season.

Massa’s gain of a podium finish came at his teammate, Valtteri Bottas’ loss. The Finnish driver has appeared on the podium on four occasions so far this season, but he missed out today after a dismal start saw him drop outside the top ten.

Ricciardo charges by Red Bull teammate in the final moments

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo climbed his way through the field and particularly in the latter stages of the race. The Australian driver secured fifth place, passing teammate Sebastian Vettel as the race came down to the wire.

Force India’s Sergio Perez completed the race further up the field from his qualifying slot of 10th place and the Mexican driver ended the action in the points with a seventh place finish. Perez scrapped for position in the race with his former McLaren teammate, Jenson Button. Button would finish eighth.

A bad day for Ferrari at home

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen was the sole driver left flying the flag for the team as they raced in front of their home crowd today. The Finnish driver ended the race in the points in ninth, but his teammate, Fernando Alonso, retired from the proceedings on lap 29 due to a technical problem on his car.

Magnussen penalized

Button’s McLaren teammate, Kevin Magnussen, found himself at the forefront of the action at times during the race. The Danish driver was under investigation by the stewards on lap 35 after coming together with Bottas.

Magnussen was found to be at fault for the incident between the pair and was issued a five second stop and go penalty as a result. Magnussen had already served his only pit stop in race for a tyre change when the penalty was issued, so the five seconds were added to his time at the end of the race. Magnussen consequently finished the race in the 10th and final point scoring position.

Gutierrez has an awkward incident with Grosjean

Beyond the top 10, the rest of the drivers were left to battle over the remaining places for the final race classification list. Sauber’s Esteban Gutierrez was in the limelight on lap 51, as he made contact with the Lotus of Romain Grosjean. Gutierrez suffered a tyre puncture and was forced to make an unexpected pit stop.

The incident between the pair caught the attention of the stewards and the two drivers were under investigation for the purpose of causing a collision. It was reported that the stewards would look into the incident after the race, but it has not yet been confirmed whether any further action will be taken with Gutierrez and Grosjean.

Daniil Kvayt's scary off

Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat had a lucky escape a wild moment on the penultimate lap of the race. He stormed off into the first chicane, only to find out that he no longer had braking capabilities. Kvyat swiftly went off the track and onto the grass and somehow maintained control.

Max Chilton crashes out

Alonso was accompanied in retirement from the race by Marussia’s Max Chilton, who was the second and only other driver who failed to reach the finish line today. Chilton bowed out of the action on lap six whe he jumped a kerb on the Monza circuit and was momentarily launched into the air. Chilton’s early exit from the race is only his second retirement from a Grand Prix in his Formula One career to date.
