Mika Hakkinen was released from the intensive care unit of the Royal Adelaide Hospital after continuing to make rapid progress in his recovery. He is expected to remain in hospital for recovery and observation for at least another week.

The doctors also released some details on the injuries Hakkinen suffered in his high-speed accident on Friday. In addition to the heavy concussion, he received a fracture to the base of his skull. This fracture prevented him from breathing, and required the on-track doctors to perfrom an emergency tracheotomy immediately after the accident.
