Esteban Gutierrez says returning to the Ferrari F1 team as a reserve driver is one of the options he is considering for 2017.

The Mexican driver is without a seat for next year after losing his drive with Haas to Kevin Magnussen.

His options to stay on in the category as a race driver, however, are very limited, with only three seats - one at Sauber and two at Manor - available at the moment.

Gutierrez spent 2015 as a third driver for Ferrari after losing his Sauber seat after 2014, and he revealed going back to the Italian team is one possibility.

"There's a few possibilities," said Gutierrez. "Ferrari is a great team that gave me a great position last year to be a third driver, an opportunity to learn from one of the best teams in Formula 1, beside two very good drivers.

"It was an interesting year, and I think that the relationship kept going very positively so that's one of the options available."

He added: "I'm working very hard. I have to say that, very honestly, at the moment there's nothing confirmed, but I'm working very hard to put things together."

Gutierrez, who has failed to score a point this year, admitted he now regrets having focused too much on his driving while not worrying about his future options.

"My biggest regret is to focus too much on achieving a good result for the team, and by focusing too much on that I didn't take care of the external situation," said Gutierrez.

"I take the responsibility for that and I'm doing my best to do better.

"I was probably too focused on the driving side and the results and not enough aware of what was going on around us."
