Testing preparations for the first European races of the 2006 season got under way at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya on April 11th, with seven drivers from four teams at work. The field comprised of a mixture of test and race drivers and the majority of the other teams are scheduled to join the action on Wednesday.

On Tuesday it was Ferrari tester Marc Gen? who was at the top of the time sheet with a best of 1:16.129. Fellow team test driver Luca Badoer was also on duty and was third. Each drove a 248 F1 chassis; Gen? carried out endurance work while Badoer focused on the development of new components.

Bridgestone runners held the top four slots as Nico Rosberg's Williams was second quickest, just under two tenths off Gen?, and team tester Narain Karthikeyan was fourth overall. Red Bull led the two Michelin teams present and fielded both its race drivers, Christian Klien fifth and David Coulthard rounded off the times in seventh.

Tester Neel Jani was the sole Toro Rosso representative and split the Red Bulls in sixth. His programme was brakes, aero assessment and set up. "We had no problems with our car and there were few interruptions for red flags, so we were able to run pretty much constantly throughout," said general manager Gianfranco Fantuzzi.

On the 12th, Renault, McLaren, Toyota, Honda, BMW Sauber and Super Aguri will arrive to start their programmes, mostly with the duties being shared between race and test drivers on various days until Friday. MF1 is not expected to join this test.
