While Renault's Fernando Alonso is firmly in the spotlight as the championship leader, teammate Giancarlo Fisichella has had an unlucky 2005 so far. The Italian won the season-opener in Melbourne but has been plagued with technical problems and various other gremlins, and has only scored points at three of the last nine races. He's hoping his luck will change, starting this weekend at Silverstone.
"I've had a lot of trouble this year," Fisichella said at Thursday's FIA press conference. "I have been very unlucky, even in the last race I had a couple of problems during the pit stop. It's not easy on that side of things… I have a great car, I have a great team but it's been a very unlucky period for me. I hope to change that unlucky period on Sunday."
The British GP is round 11 of the championship and with a 19 race season there's still a long way to go. Fisichella is convinced he will be back on the top step of the podium at some point. "We have a lot of races ahead," he commented. We have a very good car, the team is pushing really hard to develop the car, so I'm sure I will have other chances to win some races."
As for this weekend, Fisichella, like many others, believes McLaren will be hard to beat. All through the season the battle has raged between Renault and the Woking squad, with Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen the main championship contenders. Alonso had the upper hand in France after Raikkonen suffered a grid demotion penalty but the Finn may get his revenge at Silverstone.
"It wasn't too bad during the last test we had here," Fisichella said in regard to the Renault's performance at the British circuit. "I think McLaren's pace was really strong. I think that apart from McLaren we are there, so we can fight for points and to get on the podium. The characteristics of the circuit are maybe not perfect for our car but I think we are still able to get a great result."
