The final layer of tarmac has now been laid at Shanghai's International Circuit, due to host its first Formula One Grand Prix on 26 September 2004. In a few days the Circuit will reverberate to the sound of race engines for the first time, as the China Circuit Championship kicks off its first season at the landmark circuit. The weekend of 4-6 June will see both the opening event of this new Championship and the first racing to take place on the Circuit. During this weekend Ferrari will also be running a number of exciting events at the Circuit and throughout Shanghai itself.

The China Circuit Championship (CCC), jointly supported by Shanghai Circuit and CCTV, marks the start of a new era for Chinese motor racing, with the objective of raising the global profile of Chinese motorsport - what better place to do this than at Shanghai's stunning International Circuit. The Championship will give fans an exciting preview of the Circuit in action with the endorsement of the legendary Ferrari team boosting the event's profile yet further.

The Circuit has three layers of tarmac in total, on top of a 40cm crushed aggregate road base. The lowest layer of tarmac, the asphalt base course, is 10cm thick and the middle, binder course is 4cm. The top layer, the wearing course, is polymer-modified bitumen - the specialist construction of this layer, a combination of coarse and fine aggregates and mineral filler, ensures a smooth, durable surface that can withstand extreme impacts and resist high temperature deformation, while maintaining high levels of grip.

Entries for the first round of the China Circuit Championship have now closed and a strong entry list promises some exhilarating racing for Shanghai's fans, many of whom will hopefully return to the Circuit towards the end of the month, when the CCC revisits Shanghai for Round Two.
