FIA declares Perez 'reckless,' hands him a grid penalty for Brazil

Sergio Perez has been punished for his part in the opening lap crash at COTA.

Force India's Sergio Perez exited the United States Grand Prix before completing a single lap Sunday, colliding with Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari and Adrian Sutil's Sauber. He spun and a second impact with Sutil put an end to both their days. A Safety Car was needed to retrieve the cars.

Upon investigating the incident, officials have declared that Perez will face a seven-place grid penalty at Interlagos. A statement from the FIA reads, "The driver of car No. 11 (Perez) could not reasonably have expected to complete the manoeuvre. His collision with car No. 99 (Sutil) was reckless."

"It was such a shame and so disappointing and so unnecessary," Sutil said, who had started the race from ninth position and was hoping to secure his best result of the season.
