Ferrari believes it has pinpointed the probable cause of Rubens Barrichello's crash at the Hungaroring last weekend, where the Brazilian's car was sent headfirst into a tyre barrier. Approaching the newly revised turn one, the Ferrari's left rear suspension failed and the rear wheel flew off. The car then went straight on over the tarmac runoff, at considerable speed, before impacting with the barrier.

It seems that on the previous lap Barrichello hit the kerbs between turns six and seven at what Ferrari describes as 'an unusual angle' when close to the car in front. "The impacts put excessive stress on the leading arm of the upper wishbone of the left rear suspension," it said in a statement from the team.

The wishbone then collapsed under the strain of braking, on the main straight, at the start of the next lap. Barrichello was unhurt save for minor back pain due to the heavy impact.

"The car did slow down a lot on the tarmac, but I effectively had no brakes," said the Brazilian. "So for a second it was very scary, as I did not know what had happened and I felt the brake pedal go down, without slowing very much."

Turn one was altered in the hope of providing a better overtaking opportunity -- which Williams's Ralf Schumacher proved correct -- but Barrichello thinks it could perhaps be improved slightly more.

"We felt that the corner might be better for overtaking," said the Brazilian. "But that they could have done a better job in making the escape area a bit bigger. 'Here I go!' I thought," he added in regard to his crash. "I'm going to be the one who tests it first!"
