Ferrari ended the first session in China on top of the time charts.
Fourth tenths separated Fernando Alonso over Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg after a cool, but quick first practice session.
McLaren made a surge forward, ending the day in fourth two tenths off of Ricciardo for fourth.
Force India rounded out the top five with a time of one minute, 41.175, 1.3 seconds off the lead.
Other notable drivers spent the day chasing the top ten, with Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel ending up in 8th and 9th respectively, while Sergio Perez stuck himself in 15th with the powerful Mercedes powered car. Kimi Raikkonen was the only driver to not take time.
