Heinz-Harald Frentzen's chances of a good qualifying session at the Nurburgring were ruined by the wayward Arrows of Jos Verstappen.

Frentzen lay third after his first qualifying run, but on his second flying lap was blocked by Verstappen. "He clearly did not bother to look in his mirrors," said an angry Frentzen. "After my second run it rained so it was impossible to improve my grid position. I am extremely frustrated as the car had the potential to be on the third row."
