SPA SHOWERS HIT ROBERT DOORNBOS AT FIRST DAY BELGIAN GP

Heavy rainfall prevented Robert Doornbos to run a serious amount of laps today in the two Free Practise sessions at Spa-Francorchamps. The 23 year old Dutchman could only completed 8 laps in this morning's opening session.

After heavy showers hit the Belgian Ardennes in the morning, Robert Doornbos started his home Grand Prix at a drying track at 11:00 hours. The first half hour of the first Free Practise was mainly used by the Friday testdrivers to clean the track. Doornbos, who only came in action in the final 15 minutes, drove 9 laps in which he clocked a fastest laptime of 1:54.973 (P19).

The unpredictable weather round the hilly circuit also had its effect on the second Free Practise between 14:00 and 15:00 hours. Heavy rainfall unfortunately prevented all drivers to make a new appearance in the afternoon. Doornbos initially went out at the start of the session, but due to a crash of Vitantonio Liuzzi he was forced to abandon his run premature.

Robert Doornbos:

"It feels good to be back at the track which launched my carreer back in 1998 and kickstarted my F1 carreer last year after I won here in F3000. It's a shame for all the fans who could not see more F1 action today because of the bad weather. This morning we could only complete a 'baseline run' to get a first impression. I hope the weather will improve overnight, so that I can make everyone on the grandstands cheer tomorrow!"
