McLaren team principal Ron Dennis has criticized Bernie Ecclestone for his lack of support of the new rules and thinks the diminutive F1 money-man should act like the ringmaster he is. Ecclestone recently said that the new qualifying system was boring and he wants it changed but Dennis believes Bernie should be behind the sport whatever his opinion.

"We are all entitled to our opinion, but you can make an analogy with the circus," said the McLaren boss. "What would you think if the ringmaster came out and said that you shouldn't watch lion number three because he's got a bad tummy and is not going to perform too well today? Or told you that the clown had flu?"

"Whatever the show is, the ringmaster should be wholeheartedly behind it whether it's good, bad or indifferent. And that's something I'm more than happy to criticise Bernie for. He's the ringmaster and he should behave like one."

Dennis himself has been less than enthusiastic about the new rules, although no doubt his ire was somewhat appeased by the FIA delaying the ban on driver aids until next season. A meeting between team bosses and the FIA to discuss the regulation changes is scheduled for later this month.
