David Coulthard has urged McLaren to get the MP4-18 into competition as soon as possible now that Ferrari has introduced the F2003-GA. Although McLaren has had early success this season, Coulthard is concerned about being left behind. Currently second in the Drivers' championship behind team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, the Scot expects Ferrari to improve.

"We have to have the new car out as soon as possible," he said, according to the BBC. "That's the only way I believe we can continue to challenge for the championship."

"Ferrari have got their new car here (Spain) and you have to presume that the only reason they have got it is because it is quicker. That is going to take them a step forward from where they were, while we are still eking something out of this car."

Coulthard did concede that the MP4-17D has given a better performance than the team was anticipating, taking him to victory in Australia and Raikkonen to his first win in Malaysia: "We have done better than we expected we would do with the old car and the new rules," he added.

McLaren leads the Constructors' championship from Ferrari by 19 points but many are expecting that to change this weekend. It's a close fight for third and fourth too, Renault ahead of Williams by just three points.
