As Melbourne draws ever closer the verbal battle between drivers is building up as much as the anticipation for the first race. Whether it be genuine opinion or mental games to try and faze opponents, the comments have been flying thick and fast recently. Jaguar's Eddie Irvine is never one to be shy about speaking his mind; drivers, teams and any one else who happens to catch his attention have been the subject of his often scathing comments. He described Renault's Jenson Button as "the weakest link" in F1 and thinks that David Coulthard does not have what it takes to win the Driver's Championship.

Button struck back by saying Irvine was "losing it" and now Coulthard joins the fray with his opinion on the Irishman:“ With all his comments, Eddie seems to have a scatter-bomb technique which shows a lack of focus." He said. "I respect Eddie on the track but he lets himself down because he has too much to say off it. If he spent as much time testing and developing the car as he does talking and criticising other drivers on the circuit, it would improve his own performance."
