Arrows technical director Mike Coughlan has been talking to McLaren as he considers his future in Formula One. Coughlan became involved with Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) in 1998 and subsequently worked for Arrows but allegedly he and the team are now at loggerheads over his contract. Coughlan is currently on leave while he decides what to do next.

McLaren boss Ron Dennis confirmed there had been discussion but Coughlan's contractual situation would have to be resolved before McLaren could seriously consider him: "There is dialogue between the team and Mike," said Dennis. "Mike's ability to join any Grand Prix team is to do with his contractual situation with his current position. Either he is in a position to move or he will stay where he is."

"I am very familiar with the circumstances surrounding that particular possibility and as I have said before, we will always respect a contractual relationship but there is clearly a difference of opinion between him and his current employees. Until that is resolved it is not possible to consider him as a serious option."
