At the 5,793 kilometer long Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, Robert Doornbos qualified himself in a deserving 18th position for Sunday's 53 lap Italian GP. In his flying lap the Dutch Minardi debutant clocked a lap time of 1:24.904 in which he stayed well ahead of both Narain Karthikeyan and his teammate Christijan Albers.

Also in the third and in the fourth Free Practise sessions, Doornbos showed an impressive pace by improving his fastest laptime of yesterday with more than half a second. In both of the 45 minutes lasting sessions the 23-year old native of Rotterdam also lead his teammate with about the same margin.

Robert Doornbos:

"It was a clean qualifying lap in which I didn't even take too much risks. In all Free Practises today and yesterday we were already quite fast, so I started my qualifying run with confidence. Thanks to Cosworth and Bridgestone for doing a good job here in Monza."

"With our strategy in mind I'm happy to be in the 'Jordan sandwich' and I look forward to an exciting race in which I'm hopeful of finishing ahead of my former teammates!"
