STRAIGHT LINE SPEED HAMPERS CHANDHOK'S QUALIFYING
Karun Chandhok 1.40.578 (7 laps)
Bruno Senna 1.40.468 (10 laps)
Saturday, April 17, 2010: Indian Formula One driver Karun Chandhok's qualifying session was hampered by straight line speed at the Chinese Grand Prix, and will start in 24th position. The newly formed HRT F1 team put in a very strong performance in qualifying to move even closer to the other new teams, Virgin Racing and Lotus F1.
Chandhok put in a solid performance to post a time of 1:40:578 inspite of his problems, just one-tenth off his team-mate. Earlier, Chandhok was handed a five place grid penalty for tomorrow's race resulting from a gearbox change on his car.
Chandhok commented, "We had some issues this morning which was a bit unfortunate. Before qualifying we had to change the brake caliper on the car. We were struggling with straight line speed as well which basically hampered my qualifying session. We were losing at least half a second per lap which cost us a considerable amount of time. In spite of these problems we put in a competitive lap time. Our pace has been strong all weekend and it is encouraging to see that we have closed the gap to the other new teams. Without our problems we would have been less than a second off the other new teams, which is a huge achievement considering this is just our fourth race. Tomorrow we might have our first wet race so whatever the conditions, we will make the best out of it."
Dr Colin Kolles commented, "The reliability of the HRT car will be a deciding factor in tomorrow's battle and race. Let's see what the weather brings during the race tomorrow. All other teams had a winter with a lot of wet sessions. We do not know how competitive we can be in a wet race."
