CART driver and former Formula 1 driver Alessandro Zanardi was discharged from a Berlin hospital on Tuesday after spending seven weeks there after having both his legs amputated following his horrific accident during a CART race in Lausitz.

The Italian driver said at a press conference after he was discharged that he hopes to race again in the future: "My energy is now back," he said. "Now my goal is to be able to walk again. In about one year - that is my new challeng. Motor sport is an important part of my life. Perhaps I will indeed drive in races again some day, I don't really know."

Zanardi also thanked the doctors who cared for him after the accident during the American Memorial race at the Lausitzring track in Germany. The former Williams, Jordan, Minardi and Lotus driver is now heading to his home in Monte Carlo to try and recuperate and adapt to his new life.
