Broadcasting Role Comes To An End

As released yesterday, B*A*R Honda has appointed Gil de Ferran to the newly created role of Sporting Director for the London-based Formula One race team. de Ferran assumes this role effective immediately.

It has been decided jointly by de Ferran and ABC/ESPN that de Ferran will cease his role as a commentator on the Indy Racing League series broadcasts also effective immediately.

"Until late yesterday (Wednesday), the intention was for me to be a part of the broadcast team through the Indy 500," stated de Ferran. "Following that race, I would then focus 100% of my time on BAR Honda. Unfortunately, the more the matter was discussed, it became clear that some may view serving those two roles at the same time, as a conflict of interest."

"Although I know that I could have maintained my objectivity in the TV booth, I agreed with ABC and ESPN that it was best to avoid such a situation. I am quite disappointed not to be able to work with all my TV colleagues one last time -- it would have been a perfect farewell."

"We've taken this extremely rare step because both sides agreed to an unusual one-year deal at the start, recognizing that this was somewhat a feeling out process for both parties," stated Mike Pearl, Executive Producer, ABC Sports. "We've enjoyed our relationship with Gil, and we wish him the best in his new endeavor."
