Mixed pack on practice day

The F1 teams used Friday's free practice day to work on their own agendas - some on race set ups, some on qualifying - leaving a mixed bag of results at the end of the day. Ferrari finished up on top, but it was Eddie Irvine who headed up the pack with a best time of 1.20.576. His team mate was in third place, with David Coulthard above him. Mika Hakkinen was further down in seventh.

Looking very competitive today were Jean Alesi (4th), Giancarlo Fisichella (5th) and Ricardo Zonta (6th), who did a fantastic job on his first race back in F1 since his accident earlier this year at the Brazilian Grand Prix. "I think I was just so excited to be back in the car that I just went for it!" he said.

The Benson and Hedges Jordan drivers finished in 8th (Frentzen) and 14th (Hill). Both were happy with the work they did and knew they were concentrating on race set up, running heavy fuel loads, so were not concerned to be further down the grid.

Commenting on the day, Damon Hill said, "I was happy with the balance of the car on old tyres, but changing to new tyres seemed to upset the balance. Overall though, I feel quite satisfied as I could have made a good lap time if it had not been for all the yellow flags. We concentrated on race set up so I think we look in pretty good shape."
