Montreal, 8th June - The time sheet at the end of the first hour of free practice for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix has produced the usual McLaren - Ferrari duopoly with David Coulthard quickest (1.18.763) ahead of Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver Rubens Barrichello (1.19.140.) Behind them come their team mates, with Michael Schumacher (1 19.166 ) ahead of Mika Hakkinen (1.19.569.) On their first visit to the circuit, Michelin are taking time to adapt to the track, their best performer being ninth placed Ralf Schumacher in the Williams-BMW. There were problems for Jos Verstappen, the Dutchman only managing to do an installation lap before technical problems with his Arrows saw him sit out the rest of the session, while local hero Jacques Villeneuve crashed quite heavily into the walls that line the circuit which is named after his father Gilles.

The Ferrari duo worked mainly on electronics and mechanical set up, using just one set of tyres each. Along with the other drivers, both Michael and Rubens practised starts off the grid at the end of the session, just as they did in Monaco when this practice was permitted for the first time this season.
