Silverstone - 14th July 1996

Marlboro McLaren Mercedes driver Mika Hakkinen achieved his best result so far this season with a superb drive to third place, which enabled him to make his first podium appearance of 1996. His result, combined with David Coulthard's fifth place, brought a total of six points to Marlboro McLaren Mercedes' tally, enabling the team to close the gap to third placed Ferrari down to three points in the Constructors Championship.

Mika Hakkinen: "It is a fantastic feeling to be back on the podium. I had a good start and was able to resist Damon Hill's chase until he disappeared from my mirrors. He was pushing all the time, and was particularly fast in the first sector. My pitstops went extremely well, the mechanics worked very hard and did a great job. My only problem was with the overtaking of some backmarkers, which cost me a couple of seconds per lap over several laps."

David Coulthard: "It is a great result for the team to have a car in the top three. The weekend and the race have been difficult for me, but I have scored points, as the last few Grands Prix, and that helps the team maintain a good position in the Championship. Now we need to see what we can do for Hockenheim. Today's race showed once again that the car is very reliable, that our top speed is good, as is our balance in the short corners. I think that we should be in good shape in Germany on Mercedes-Benz home ground."

Norbert Haug: "This podium finish, just before going to Hockenheim, represents a good team effort, which in addition, brings us six championship points. We have achieved three podium finishes since the European Grand Prix at Nurburgring and this is the third consecutive race in which we have placed both cars in the top six. We now hope to continue this level of performance in front of our home crowd at the German Grand Prix."

Ron Dennis: "This was a good third place, complemented by a determined fifth place from David, with the resulting points moving us closer to third in the Constructors Championship. I am particularly pleased that no one was able to overtake Mika on the track. We are getting closer bit by bit and are very much looking forward to Hockenheim."
