CURRENT STATUS OF THE INVESTIGATIONS REGARDING MIKA HAKKINEN'S DAMAGED TYRE.

Having closely examined what tiny remnants could be found of the tyre which failed on Mika Hakkinen's car during the German Grand Prix, Bridgestone and McLaren technicians have reached the following conclusions:

1. There was no failure of the tyre consistent with incorrect or faulty construction. 2. There was no structural failure on the McLaren car.

Several other possibilities remain which could explain the failure, although there is insufficient evidence to establish exactly what happened.

These possibilities include high temperatures in the tyre; tyre pressures; a cut in the tyre; or a blister due to some or all of the preceding circumstances.

Bridgestone and McLaren are continuing to co-operate fully during the course of these Investigations and McLaren are examining their utilisation of the tyres whilst Bridgestone will further study the operational conditions for the tyres in these high speed applications.
