Former F1 driver Mark Blundell to compete in Network Q Rally of GB
Mark Blundell, former Formula 1 and IndyCar driver, will make his rally driving debut next month in the Network Q Rally of Great Britain. Cambs/Herts border-based Blundell, 36, has tasted success in Formula 1, IndyCars and Sportscar racing, but racing with a passenger alongside will be a new experience for him.
Blundell, MG Sport & Racing ambassador, will drive a MG ZR Super 1600 rally car in the Rally which takes place from November 14 - 17th in Wales, with Cardiff as the HQ for the event. With just over one month until the largest event in the British rally calendar, Blundell is putting in intensive training in preparation and has two 'warm up' stage rallies lined up ahead of the Network Q Rally to provide him with track time and to give him experience of driving his new car with co-driver, motorsport journalist, Bob McKenzie.
"Competing in the Network Q Rally of Great Britain this year is a daunting challenge," says Blundell. "But it's one I'm relishing and I can't wait to get in the MG ZR to give it a crack. I have experience of racing single seaters from my F1 and Indycar days and I'm used to competing in more conventional 'roofed' cars in the Le Mans 24 hours endurance race, but I've never had someone sitting beside me issuing instructions. That's going to take some getting used to and I'll have to remember to listen to my co-driver!"
"This new venture into rallying is a real treat for me and I must thank MG for giving me this opportunity. As a driver, I'm always looking for something to push myself further and in different directions - the Network Q Rally will certainly give me another driving experience and I hope I can run well, flying the flag for the sole British manufacturer in the event."
Blundell is MG Sport & Racing motorsport ambassador and has competed in the Le Mans 24 Hour race with the company for the last two years. In addition, he regularly appears on television as resident driver expert for the ITV Formula One commentary team.
