Bite-size tech: Mercedes kiel probe array

Mercedes' development work for 2017 continues in Brazil as a kiel probe array was mounted behind rear wheel of Lewis Hamilton’s car.

The rig is twisted in order that the kiel probes themselves are splayed at different angles, allowing the team to collect the desired information.

The probes collect data from the wake of the rear tyre, the diffuser and other surrounding airflow structures, all of which will change in 2017. These data points can be used as a baseline by the engineers, as they look to understand the data collected during pre-season testing, next year.
