Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello was the fastest man after the San Marino Grand Prix Saturday practice sessions, taking over from Kimi Raikkonen who was quickest in the first session. The McLaren's best time was 1:23.196, Barrichello taking it down to 1:22.819. Michael Schumacher managed fourth and fifth quickest from the two practices and had an absent-minded wander into the gravel while he was at it.

Mark Webber was on the pace again, despite having a problem with the Jaguar early on. In the second session he was third fastest behind Ralf Schumacher. Ralf managed to hold on to the second best time despite crashing out in the last sector early on in the second session.

Juan Pablo Montoya wound up in eighth while Webber's team-mate Antonio Pizzonia was at the bottom of the times. Fernando Alonso was the best placed Renault in sixth but Jarno Trulli was outside the top ten. Sauber's Heinz-Harald Frentzen suffered a blown engine in the first session and Jordan's Ralph Firman also came to a halt on track, in the second practice.

Jacques Villeneuve made it into the top ten for BAR, as did Olivier Panis for Toyota. Minardi took its traditional place at the back, save for Pizzonia. A few unscheduled visits to the gravel and Ralf's crash were the incidents but generally a fairly sedate time ahead of this afternoon's qualifying. Final top eight classification: Barrichello, R. Schumacher, Webber, Raikkonen, M. Schumacher, Alonso, Coulthard, Montoya.
