Webber Stars In Formula One Debut As Schumacher Completes Melbourne Hat-Trick

As Michael Schumacher completed a hat-trick in Melbourne today, Australia's new Formula One driver Mark Webber scored a brilliant fifth place in front of a home crowd of 127,000 on debut in the Foster's Australian Grand Prix. Schumacher extended his record of Grand Prix victories to 54 in winning the Australian season-opener in the world championship for the third straight year.

But Webber received an ovation as big as the four-time world champion as he guided his Minardi into fifth place behind Schumacher's Ferrari, Juan Pablo Montoya's BMW-Williams, Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren-Mercedes and Eddie Irvine's Jaguar.

Sixth place went to another Finn, Mika Salo, as Toyota scored a world championship point on its debut. Today's attendance was down 1,500 on last year after rain in Melbourne this morning.

However, the four-day attendance at the first Foster's-sponsored Grand Prix in Melbourne of 371,800 was up 2,300 on last year.
