Sauber Petronas and AMD, one of the world's leading producers of microprocessors, have signed a partnership agreement, under which AMD will be supplying computer technology to the Swiss Formula 1 team. The new partnership will enable Sauber to achieve further progress in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a critical factor complementing the team's wind tunnel work.

"The entire field of aerodynamics and CFD is becoming increasingly important in Formula 1, that's why it is crucial to have the right partners," Team Principal Peter Sauber commented on the agreement with AMD.

When it came time for Sauber to upgrade their computing capabilities to push the limits of computer-aided research, they carefully evaluated all the 32-bit and 64-bit processor technologies available in the marketplace, and the results were clear: the AMD Opteron processor delivered the best overall 64-bit performance with the added benefit of 32-bit backward compatibility.

"AMD is rapidly becoming the de facto standard for high-performance computing in the highly competitive world of Formula One racing, and we look forward to working with Sauber Petronas to help them develop the cutting-edge solutions they require to be successful," said Henri Richard, AMD's executive vice president, worldwide sales and marketing.

"By delivering unparalleled performance, the AMD Opteron processor with Direct Connect Architecture will allow Sauber to protect their current technology investments as well as gain a critical competitive advantage."
