FAENZA, ITALY, February 7, 2001 - European Minardi F1 today codirms that the highly talented young Spanish driver, Fernando Alonso, has signed to drive for the team in 2001. The announcement follows Alonso's test of a European Minardi chassis at the Vairano circuit, near Milan, last Saturday.

The 19-year-old finished fourth overall in the FIA International F3000 Championship last season, his first year of competition in the bruising Formula One "feeder series", and even scored a well-deserved victory at the dauntingly fast Spa circuit, in Belgium. He is already familiar to European Minardi personnel as a result of his role as test driver for the team in 2000, and is strongly tipped for future Formula One success.

European Aviation Group chief, Paul Stoddart, who acquired the Italian Formula One team last week commented, "We've had our eye on Fernando for some time, and we are delighted to have signed him. Any driver who can come into the ultra-competitive world of Formula 3000 and, in only his second season of single-seater racing, win at a circuit like Spa, is clearly a bit special. He is going to be a great addition to the team, and I know he will help us hit some of the ambitious targets we are setting for European Minardi Fl."
