"We have made good progress since we started working with the hybrid car," admits the young Spaniard. "From my point of view, pre-season testing is very much like the work I did for Renault in 2002: you need to be methodical, patient, and accurate in your feedback. We have been running lots of new parts since the launch, and each one has been a step forward. We are getting to know the R23 a lot better, and the first signs are very encouraging."

At Valencia yesterday, Alonso set a fastest time of 1:10.8, in a car that is still waiting for its definitive aerodynamic package. "Our previous quickest time at Valencia was 1:11.7. That just goes to show how much we have achieved over the winter," explains Fernando. "I'm expecting that we will make another step forward when we run with the new bodywork Already, the car is more stable, and has more grip. I have confidence in the car when I'm driving, and that's one of the most important things for a driver."

Fernando will fly out to Melbourne on 2 March.
