Fernando Alonso and the Renault F1 Team have been nominated in the 2006 Laureus World Sports Awards.

2005 was a remarkable year for Fernando Alonso and the Renault F1 Team. The Spaniard became the youngest World Champion in Formula 1 history, while Renault won its first ever world championship as a works manufacturer in a history that stretches back more than a century.

Last week, both the Spaniard and his team were named among a prestigious list of nominations for the 2006 Laureus World Sports Awards: Alonso in the 'World Sportsman of the Year' category, and Renault in the 'World Team of the Year'.

The shortlist of candidates was compiled by a panel of the world's leading sports editors, writers and broadcasters -- and will then be voted on by a panel of 42 sporting legends, including Giacomo Agostini and Emerson Fittipaldi from the world of motorsport, and others such as Pele, or Fernando's own hero Miguel Indurain.

The winners will be announced in Barcelona on 22 May 2006, just ahead of Formula One's blue-riband race in Monaco.

"Everybody in the Renault F1 Team is very proud to have been nominated for 'World Team of the Year' in the Laureus awards," explained Managing Director Flavio Briatore. "At Renault, we know that there is not one person that makes a team do well, or do badly. Every team has a heart, which means its people working together towards a shared goal. We are very proud of our team spirit, and I am delighted for every person in this team, that they have received this recognition of their contribution."
