Volkswagen drivers want to defend double lead in the dunes
Wolfsburg (09 July 2008). The Volkswagen drivers from the Signature team are setting their sights on defending their double lead of the standings at the fifth Formula 3 Euro Series race weekend at Zandvoort, the Netherlands: For one, Edoardo Mortara continues leading the drivers' standings by a wide margin and for the other, the French Signature team is heading the team standings before the two races on the dune circuit on the North Sea coast as well.
"Edoardo Mortara and the Volkswagen Signature team have a very good starting base in their fight for the championship title, however, the races at Zandvoort only mark the first half of the season. In the Formula 3 Euro Series, success and failure are close together - this has been demonstrated by the many fiercely competitive races this year. The final tally will only be prepared at the end," says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "Although we've surpassed the goals we set for ourselves by clinching our first victory and seven further podium positions, we continue concentrating on perfecting our contribution to success."
"Signature and Volkswagen have done a very good job - prior to the season, nobody expected us to be running in front at this point in time. Now, I'm concentrating more on the championship, individual wins aren't everything," emphasises front runner Edoardo Mortara, who has been the only driver to clinch points at each of the races so far. The 21-year-old Italian already knows the former Grand Prix circuit from the previous season: "Zandvoort is a classic venue on the Formula 3 calendar and has its own special characteristics. The circuit offers many very fast turns and a good opportunity for overtaking - the 'Tarzanbocht' - at the end of the finish straight. Since the circuit is located directly alongside the North Sea, there is often a heavy wind blowing sand onto the track." With Franck Mailleux and Jean Karl Vernay (both from France) in positions seven and eight as well as newcomer Robert Wickens (Canada) - the runner-up at the Norisring - in 15th place of the overall standings, the Signature squad around Philippe Sinault has three further hot irons in the fire in the fight for the team classification.
RC Motorsport to start with three Volkswagen-Dallara cars
Maximilian Gotz no longer drives for RC Motorsport: after a so far disappointing season, the racing team and the management of the 21-year old driver from Uffenheim agreed to cease their collaboration. The team from the Milan suburb of Lacchiarella now concentrates on the three racing cars driven by Congfu Cheng (China), Martin Plowman (Great Britain) and Jens Klingmann (Leimen), powered by the 210-hp two-litre Formula 3 engine from Wolfsburg.
