ATS Formula 3 Cup
First Volkswagen victory by Laurens Vanthoor
The Belgian Laurens Vanthoor, who is only 17 years old, clinched the first victory for himself and for Volkswagen at the Sachsenring at the eighth weekend of the season in the highly competitive ATS Formula 3 Cup. After the driver from the Van Amersfoort Racing team had finished Saturday's race as the runner-up after starting from pole, he was not to be beaten on Sunday. The win enabled Vanthoor, who had been on the podium eight times before, to strengthen his fifth place in the standings. His team-mate Rahel Frey from Switzerland occupied places 18 and 23 at both races in her Dallara F307 Volkswagen.
ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup
Second consecutive win for Steinhof
The Pole Maciek Steinhof won the ninth round of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup at the Sachsenring. After his maiden victory at Brands Hatch, this was the 22-year-old driver's second exploit in a row. In difficult conditions on a rain-drenched track Alexander Rambow from Zehdenick in second place took the overall lead from Shane Williams. The South African came fourth on the tradition-steeped circuit near Chemnitz behind the Swede Andreas Simonsen. Maximilian Sandritter (Raubling) in fifth place secured an early title win in the rookie classification.
ADAC Formula Masters powered by Volkswagen
Victories for Armando Parente and Marco Sørensen
Armando Parente (P) and Marco Sørensen (DK) won rounds eleven and twelve of the ADAC Formula Masters season at the Sachsenring. The Dane was the quickest driver of the weekend but due to a suspension defect lost victory on Saturday to Parente, who won his first race in the junior series "powered by Volkswagen". In Sunday's race in pouring rain Sørensen made up for his misfortune in the first race by delivering a commanding performance. This time, Parente took fourth place, thus continuing to lead the standings. In Saturday's race Ashwin Sundar, who is supported by Volkswagen India, achieved his best result of the season with a ninth-place finish, in the second race the 19-year-old occupied 13th place.
Formula 3 Euro Series
Fighting performances by the Volkswagen drivers
At rounds 15 and 16 of the Formula 3 Euro Series at Barcelona, the Volkswagen drivers showed strong recoveries. Overall runner-up Edoardo Mortara (I / Team Signature) in his Dallara F308 Volkswagen improved on Sunday from 15th on the grid to ninth in the race but was forced to retire on Sunday after a starting accident. The German Jens Klingmann (Leimen / Team RC Motorsport), who finished Saturday's race in eleventh place after starting from position 25 and further improved on Sunday to eighth place, consistently moved forwards as well. For the 18-year-old, this has been the best result of the season so far.
Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup
Debut exploit for Jimmy Underhill
21-year-old Jimmy Underhill scored his maiden win in the American "touring car school" at the fifth round of the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup at the Iowa Speedway. The driver from Denver had secured the pole position in qualifying and did not give his rivals a chance in the 33-lap race either. Underhill is the fifth winner of the five races staged so far. The runner-up at the oval debut of the Jetta TDI Cup was Mark Pombo in front of Michael de Nino in third place.
