Volkswagen victories at Valencia thanks to Mortara and Magnussen
Victory at the debut: Kevin Magnussen won Sunday's race of the Formula 3 Euro Series at Valencia (E). The 17-year-old Dane, who contested the number one junior formula series for the first time, used position two on the grid to clinch victory in the second race "powered by Volkswagen".
With a clear advantage, the driver from the Volkswagen partner team Motopark Academy prevailed against Nicolas Marroc (Dallara-Mercedes) and Volkswagen driver Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium). With a sixth-place finish, Vanthoor's Signature team colleague, leader of the standings Edoardo Mortara (Italy), grabbed the last championship point after having started from position eight. Saturday had been successful for Volkswagen too: Mortara celebrated his second win of the season after starting from the pole position. The Italian, who was born in Geneva, secured a total of twelve championship points and extended his lead in the Formula 3 Euro Series on the third race weekend. Volkswagen's tally in the Euro Series season now reflects four out of six possible victories and two out of three possible pole positions.
Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director:
"The Volkswagen drivers as well as the teams showed strong performances at Valencia and they were rewarded with special victories. With his exploit on Saturday, Edoardo Mortara enlarged his cushion of points while Kevin Magnussen celebrated a resounding debut success: points in the first and victory in the second race. I'm very happy for him and for Motopark Academy who won a Euro Series race for the first time with Volkswagen Power."
#5 - Edoardo Mortara (Italien) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 - Team Signature
Qualifying: 1st place - race 1: 1st place - race 2: 6th place
"A really special weekend for me: pole on Friday and race win on Saturday. On Sunday my plan was to avoid starting collisions from P8 on the grid but to still recover places. Having clinched a point by finishing sixth is good because there weren't many opportunities to move forwards. I'm pleased with our showing at Valencia."
#15 - Kevin Magnussen (Danemark) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 - Motopark Academy
Qualifying: 10th place - race 1: 7th place - race 2: 1st place
"I went to Valencia with zero expectations. Immediately winning a race in such a series on the first weekend was more than I'd been hoping for. Of course, the format with the reverse starting order of the top eight from the first race was in my favour. I had a good start and was able to gain some distance. After that, staying concentrated was the only thing that counted."
