New champion in the Formula 3 Euro Series: Edoardo Mortara

Wolfsburg (18 September 2010). A cheering champion with Volkswagen: Edoardo Mortara (Italy) is the new and deserving champion of the Formula 3 Euro Series. The 23-year-old driver from the Volkswagen partner team Signature only claimed a sixth-place finish at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben three races before the end of the season - but remained directly in front of his only immediate rival Marco Wittmann (Germany) and thereby secured the champion's title in one of the world's most powerful junior series early.

He thus follows in the footsteps of Formula 1 drivers like Lewis Hamilton (the winner in 2005) or Nico Hulkenberg (the winner in 2008). "I'm overjoyed," beamed the champion. "At Volkswagen and Signature we're like a big family. It's wonderful for me to be able to say thanks to my great team and for the faith put in me by winning the championship." Mortara has dominated the whole season in his 210-hp Dallara Volkswagen by having clinched six victories and four pole positions so far. In the overall standings, ahead of Wittmann (65), his score of 90 points cannot be equalled any more. At the home race of his team, Motopark Academy, at Oschersleben Antonio Felix da Costa (Portugal) as the best Volkswagen driver finished third behind the winner, Valtteri Bottas (ART). Tomorrow the field of the top eight will start in reverse order - good chances for Mortara and Wittmann to clinch Volkswagen's 75th victory in Formula 3 before the end of the year.

After a difficult GP2 season Mortara at the end of 2009 won the Macao Grand Prix - the world's most prestigious Formula 3 race. This season the 23-year-old returned to the Formula 3 Euro Series which he has dominated with six race wins so far. For Mortara, who competes for the French Signature team, the championship win marks the biggest exploit in his career to date.

Edoardo Mortara: "It's a great feeling to be champion. At Volkswagen and Signature we're like a big family. It's wonderful for me to be able to say thanks to my great team and for the faith put in me by winning the championship. I'm hoping that this exploit will give a major boost to my further career. And I'm already looking forward to the opportunity of the DTM test which is given to the Formula 3 Euro Series Champion."
