'HALF-TIME CHAMP' MORTARA TAKES FOURTH WIN OF THE SEASON
NURBURG (GER) 7 AUGUST 2010: Edoardo Mortara increased his lead in the Formula 3 Euroseries championship with victory from pole position at the Nurburgring today.
The Italian's start was not as good as team mate Laurens Vanthoor, with whom he shared the front row. Edo suffered wheel spin on the run down to Turn 1, Vanthoor went up the inside, but Edo braked at the last possible moment, went wide, and passed the Belgian around the outside. It was a fantastic display of close-but-fair racing between the two friends.
From there, Mortara was in control of the race, managing his tyres and the gap to Vanthoor for the 22 lap duration. He recorded the fastest lap.
This was the fourth Race 1 victory of the year for Edo from five rounds this season. He now leads the championship with 65 points, 22 ahead of Marco Whitmann. Given today's race was the ninth of the 18 race season, Mortara can be considered the unofficial half-time champion. With the reverse grid, he will line up eighth for tomorrow's race.
Race position: 1 / Grid position: 1 / Fastest lap: 1:23.631, lap 6 / Sunny and dry, 20o. ambient and 30-39o. track temperature / Drivers' championship standing: =1st, 65 points
EDOARDO MORTARA: "This was quite a difficult race for me, at least as far as the first corner was concerned. Normally you get wheel spin when you pull away, but it happened to me several metres down the road at high revs. We need to investigate why this was. The exact same thing happened on the practice start, so obviously there's a problem of some sort.
"Laurens made a really fantastic start, and was very fair through Turn 1. We were racing, but we are team mates and we both gave each other room. After re-taking the lead, I just managed the tyres. It doesn't matter whether you win by ten seconds or one second. Overtaking here is difficult, and so starting eighth tomorrow one has to be realistic what can be achieved. But so far I'm very happy with the way the weekend is going."
OLIVIER BACCHIS (RACE ENGINEER - SIGNATURE TEAM): "I'm really happy to win this race here as it's a key race for the championship. ART have won for the past two years at the Nurburgring, while Signature has never won before. It's been a 'bogey' track for us in the past. Edo made a great first part of the start, but then wheel spin kicked in and Laurens got ahead. Their fight through Turn 1 was very fair. Both drivers did a great job today, and a 1-2 is a fabulous result for Signature."
