Volkswagen driver Vernay on podium again in Nuremberg

Wolfsburg (28 June 2009). His sights are firmly set on the championship: By clinching places seven and two at the Norisring Volkswagen driver Jean Karl Vernay (France/Team Signature) safeguarded his chances of winning the title in the Formula 3 Euro Series. The 21-year-old Frenchman is ranking third in the Formula 3 Euro Series standings. His team-mate Tiago Geronimi (Brazil) crossed the finish line on Sunday in fifth place, won the rookie classification for the first time and scored his first championship points.

A highly spectacular recovery by Mika Maki on Sunday went unrewarded. After the Finn had retired in the first race and had to start to the second round from 23rd place he pushed forward from the rear of the field. As early as in the starting phase he made up eight positions and overtook further rivals lap by lap. On the 30th lap he was already running in the points and, literally in the final turn, took third place. But it was too early to rejoice: For overtaking a rival once under a yellow flag the 21-year-old received a 30-second time penalty after seeing the chequered flag and was classified only in 15th place.

Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director:
"More than 100,000 spectators at the circuit and TV viewers saw an extremely exciting race. We congratulate Christian Vietoris on his well-deserved victory. However, Jean Karl Vernay showed that the package consisting of the Volkswagen engine, Dallara chassis as well as our teams and drivers was capable of winning here as well. That this wasn't quite achieved can also be attributed to factors that can't be influenced in motorsport: difficult weather conditions, unusual ways in which the races went and, last but not least, accidents."

Qualifying: 9th place - race 1: 7th place -race 2: 2nd place

"Second place on Sunday, scoring of important points and third in the overall standings - I can be happy with this outcome. However, particularly in the second race the potential was higher because our speed would have been enough to clinch victory. Unfortunately, I was hit so hard by a rival in the first turn that my car was heavily damaged. I'm very confident for the next races because we're absolutely competitive and will continue fighting for the championship."

#25 - Tiago Geronimi (BR) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 - Team Signature
Qualifying: 22nd place - race 1: not classified - race 2: 5th place

"I'm very pleased even though the weekend at the Norisring was no mean feat for a rookie like me. The mixed conditions in qualifying were tricky, in the first race the crash in the early stage took me out of the race. This makes me even happier about fifth place on Sunday, my so far best race in the Formula 3 Euro Series. Things can continue like this as far as I'm concerned."
