Volkswagen drivers extend lead in championship standings

A one-two victory on Saturday and two podium positions on Sunday: the Volkswagen drivers Edoardo Mortara (Italy) and Marco Wittmann (Germany) extended their lead in the Formula 3 Euro Series standings with a brilliant performance at the Norisring. With a score of 54 points Mortara commandingly ranks at the top of the junior racing series; Wittmann, who has 39 points, is the runner-up.

Edoardo Mortara was the man who determined events at the Nuremberg city street circuit: after posting a fastest time in free practice he set the best mark in qualifying as well and scored the additional point for the pole position. In Saturday's race the 23-year-old Signature driver clinched his third win of the season in an uncontested performance, followed by his team colleague Marco Wittmann. Consequently, both started into the round on Sunday from positions seven and eight - the grid positions are determined in the reverse order of Saturday's results. Straight from the start Mortara and Wittmann continued the Signature showing and made up ground position by position. In the battle for second place Mortara and Alexander Sims (ART Grand Prix/Mercedes) got off the racing line. Wittmann skilfully took advantage of this mishap and recovered two positions this way. The 20-year-old German defended second place up to the finish, while Mortara in third place achieved his seventh podium position in the eighth race.

Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director:

"It was a very successful Formula 3 weekend for Volkswagen. Edoardo Mortara and Marco showed very strong performances. At the moment the combination of the Signature team and the Volkswagen engine represents the best package but the season is still long and the championship remains open. The drivers and the team have to continue to work hard in order to achieve the big aim of winning the title."

#5 - Edoardo Mortara (Italien) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 - Team Signature
Qualifying: 1st place - race 1: 1st place - race 2: 3rd place

"An almost perfect weekend - of course it's great to clinch 15 out of 17 possible points. Our team is doing a superb job. We've had a package that was capable of winning on each of the weekends so far. My advantage in the standings is pretty comfortable at the moment but nothing's been decided yet."

#6 - Marco Wittmann (Markt Erlbach) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 - Team Signature
Qualifying: 3rd place - race 1: 2nd place - race 2: 2nd place

"Of course I'm very pleased with two second places. I waited in both races and have been rewarded for it. Standing on the podium at my home round is very special - as a young boy I used to watch the races from the stands here."
