LIGHTS-TO-FLAG ROMP FOR MORTARA AT THE NORISRING
NUREMBERG (GER) 3 JULY 2010: Edoardo Mortara has extended his lead in the Formula 3 Euroseries championship with a faultless win at Germany's Norisring.
The 23 year-old made a good start from pole position and sustained pressure from ART's Valtteri Bottas. Edo had pulled a gap of 1.0 second ahead of Alexander Sims' accident on lap 20, which brought out the yellow flags at the final turn and allowed Bottas to close again. Then, on lap 28, an accident involving three cars at the hairpin summoned the safety car. When the race got underway again on lap 32, Edo's Signature team mate Marco Whittmann, overtook Bottas at the first corner. Edo took the chequered flag by a comfortable margin. He now leads Whittmann by 16 points in the championship.
Race position: 1 / Grid position: 1 / Fastest lap: 0:48.983, lap 17 / Sunny and dry, 31° ambient and average 42° track temperature / Drivers' championship standing: =1st, 50 points
EDOARDO MORTARA: "This wasn't the easiest race to win from pole, because it's really easy for the following car to get a tow at this track. I knew, therefore, that to win this race I needed to do 35 consecutive qualifying laps and make no mistakes.
"Valtteri is a great driver and was pushing me really hard. When the yellow flags came out at the last corner, I was taking no risks at all, and that meant I was under pressure on the main straight. We took a little bit of wing off after qualifying yesterday and I think that really helped me defend today.
"You always get nervous when you're leading and the safety car comes out. I'd managed to build a bit of a gap, and suddenly I had to do it all over again.
"Today I had to drive flat out, and it worked. I'm extremely happy. Well done to my team mate Marco for finishing second, it's great to get a one-two finish for Signature and Volkswagen."
