MANOR ADDS MERCEDES-BENZ JUNIOR MERHI TO F3 EUROSERIES LINE-UP
Fast rising Spanish racing driver Roberto Merhi has today been officially confirmed as the third signing for Manor Motorsport's 2009 Formula 3 Euroseries line-up.
The 17-year-old, the first ever Spaniard to join the Mercedes-Benz Junior Development Programme, arrives in F3 Euroseries with Manor as a driver with a huge pedigree having already become a race winner last year in the Spanish F3 series and also in Formula Renault.
Joining up-and-coming Brazilian stars Cesar Ramos and Pedro Nunes at the Dinnington based team, Merhi is widely regarded as one of Spain's most promising young single-seater drivers and Manor certainly has high hopes for the teenage sensation.
"Roberto's signing is fantastic news for Manor. To have three drivers confirmed with well over two months still go until the start of the new F3 Euroseries season is very pleasing", said team boss John Booth, "Roberto is held in very high regard. To have won races in Eurocup Formula Renault and Spanish F3 last year proves his pace and his talent."
Following a successful karting career in Europe, where he won numerous races and titles including the Torneo Industrie 100cc Junior Karting Championship and the South Garda ICA Junior Karting Winter Cup, Merhi graduated to cars in 2006 where he finished third overall in the Italian Formula Renault Winter Series. He also contested two races in Spanish F3.
In 2007 he competed in a variety of championships with his greatest success coming in Italian Formula Renault where he was fourth overall in the standings with one victory and two further podiums. Merhi also raced in Eurocup Formula Renault, the Spanish F3 Championship, the Spanish GT Championship and also the South Garda KF1 Karting Winter Cup.
Last year was undoubtedly the Spaniard's most successful to date. With three wins and 13 other podiums he became Vice-Champion of the Formula Renault West European Cup, in Eurocup Formula Renault he was fourth overall with two wins and seven other podiums and in Spanish F3 he contested a handful of races, taking victory in two.
Merhi also competed in the 2008 BP Ultimate Masters at Zolder in Belgium and the 55th Windsor Arch Macau F3 Grand Prix at the Circuito da Guia in the former Portuguese enclave.
The 2009 Formula 3 Euroseries begins at Hockenheim in Germany on 16th/17th May and takes in eight other venues before concluding back at the former home of the German Formula One Grand Prix on 24th/25th October. Manor will also take part in the Masters of Formula 3 race at Zandvoort in The Netherlands on 13th/14th June.
