With 12 races of the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season contested, Briton Tom Blomqvist (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) holds second championship position. However, the lead of championship leader Esteban Ocon (Prema Powerteam) over the son of former World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist amounts to 82 points.
What is you interim conclusion with the first four race weekends of the season contested? Altogether, I’m happy with my current situation. We have been fast at any circuit we raced at so far and I already was able to secure three race wins. Apart from the Hockenheim meeting, where I received 10-position grid penalties for two races, due to an engine change, I could win at every venue of the season, to date. On the other hand, the penalties for the engine change cost me a lot of points but that’s something I just can’t change.
Why did you opt for contesting another FIA Formula 3 European Championship season? Formula 3 in general is an important category and the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in particular is contested by a lot of good teams and fast drivers. The racing is extremely close and there are 30 cars on the grid. The level is as high as nowhere else on our planet. Furthermore, the series developed impressively, in the past two years.
You switched to Jagonya Ayam with Carlin, in the off-season. Could you tell us the reasons for making this step? Jagonya Ayam with Carlin made me an offer to contest the season for them. I haven’t got many individual sponsors and so, I was really thankful for the chance they offered me – and even more so as Carlin is a really good team. The support I am provided with by Jagonya Ayam, this year, is really great and I’m very happy about it.
Could you please describe your expectations regarding the 2014 season? That’s easy: I want to become the European Champion.
What circuits on the 2014 calendar are you particularly looking forward to? My favourite circuits are the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone.
What did you do in the off-season to prepare for the things to come? I use to fly the New Zealand, in winter. My family lives there and that’s where I grew up. In that period of time I try to recover, clear my mind and stop thinking about motor racing, all the time. I enjoy the time I spend there before returning to Europe to begin my preparations for the coming season. And when it comes to preparing for a race weekend, I visit my team several days prior to the event and we discuss the coming races. Furthermore I practice in the simulator to get into the rhythm.
