F3 Euro Series Jonathan Summerton Year End Review
"FANTASTIC!" is the way Jonathan described the year, especially winning the final race at Hockenheim, "and being the only Rookie to win a race in 2006 made it sweeter. Rudi and Team Muecke Motorsport did an unbelievable job." With 1 win, 3 podiums, 10 top 10 finishes you can see why people are talking about this 18 year old rookie. "I'd like to thank my sponsors, Smart Race Paint, Team Injury.com, PRO , First American Real Estate, Arai and Sparco Their support has been a big help to me. To reach this point within a three year carreer is Awesome!" said Jonathan.
In an interview on the season Jonathan described his missing a couple of days in early season due to food poisoning, which put him behind at the start of the season. In the first race he qualified in the mid field in 18th, causing him to be taken out in the first race and placing him at the back for the 2nd race. "It was great for learning as in that sprint race I gained 15 places."
"For Euro Speedway I got the handling of the car and was quick; to my surprise beating some of the drivers that had intimidated me by reputation." Qualifying 3rd and finishing 4th proved again that he has the talent. In the second race he crossed the finish line 7th. "After this I knew we could do it!"
Oscherslaben qualifying 6th was good but finishing 17th was disappointing. In race 2 he moved up to10th but the team struggled with set up.
It was a great experience to race at the Brands Hatch circuit despite it being near impossible to pass.
"At Norisring I had my first podium in F3 Euro series. This was awesome, especially in front of such a large crowd. Norisring, the only street race in 2006, was a fairly intimidating racing next to concrete and steel with no run off. I didn't want to damage the car and think I was a little cautious during qualifying placing 4th for the race. I felt the car was good and just kept pushing finishing 3rd. In the second race with the reverse grid I made a mistake at the start finishing in 11th."
Nurburgring we did great in qualifying and 4th in the race.
Zandvoort tires were the problem when it was damp we chose rain tires. I qualified 7th Finished 7th in the feature .
Barcelona Rain and more rain caused me problems as I had not much experience in the rain. Qualifying 12th didn't help as I spun off in the first lap and in the second race was knocked off.
Lemans weekend was a great one. With the season getting close to the end with all the drivers settled into their teams Jonathan qualified 5th and finished the first race in 2nd after a crash in the first corner caused problems for Jonathan. In the second race Jonathan moved up the most out of the top eight drivers and worked his way from 7th to 4th by the end of race fighting for 3rd.
The last race of the season was Hockenheim. Staring the weekend off well in 4th place after the rain practice was very good. Going into qualifying Jonathan was feeling confident and was hoping for a good car and result but it didn't happen. Jonathan qualified 11th. In race one Jonathan worked his way through the field doing an outstanding job missing all the action and crashes in the race and finished the race in 8th place. In the second race he started from pole and led from flag to flag where he won the finale race of the season proving his ability to perform.
For next year Jonathan is hoping to do the F3 Euro series again. When asked Jonathan said, "Of course I would love to go up to GP2 series and I have been offered the opportunity to test but I feel that another year of learning will definitely position me for wins in GP2 and ultimately Formula 1."
