Volkswagen driver Vernay wins finale of Formula 3 Euro Series

Wolfsburg (25 October 2009). Volkswagen driver Jean Karl Vernay has won the Formula 3 Euro Series finale at Hockenheim. The Italian Mirko Bortolotti, who made his debut in the leading junior racing series, finished third and thus complemented the positive results achieved by the drivers competing with Volkswagen engines. In Saturday's race Vernay had already finished on the podium, in third place. In the standings he moved up to fifth place as the best Volkswagen driver, Mika Maki occupies position six.

The race on Sunday required both tactical and driving skills. The race started on a wet track which dried off considerably by the time the chequered flag was waved. The majority of the drivers started on rain tyres, including Jean Karl Vernay. After a poor start the Signature driver first dropped to 13th place, but then recovered to fifth. On lap 13 he switched to tread-less slicks, made up ground to the front runners with giant leaps and overtook the race leader Christopher Zanella (Switzerland, Dallara-Mercedes) on the final lap.

Mirko Bortolotti (Carlin Motorsport) on the other hand started out on slicks, like Vernay avoided the numerous fights and after the first lap advanced from 20th place to third.

Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director:
"That was truly a thrilling race and watching it with bated breath was really good fun. Jean Karl Vernay showed a first-class performance today. In a turbulent race he was very quick, but avoided risks. Signature opted for the right strategy by switching to slicks towards the middle of the race. In addition, Mirko Bortolotti and Carlin Motorsport caused a huge surprise. Today's victory is a perfect conclusion of Volkswagen's very successful Formula 3 season. In both the German Cup and the British Championship the titles went to drivers using Volkswagen engines, in the Formula 3 Euro Series we celebrated four victories."

Qualifying: 6th place - race 1: 3rd place - race 2: 1st place

"An incredible race. My car was perfect; I was easily able to overtake other cars. My start was botched; I lost a couple of places but then pushed to make up ground again. I didn't take any big risks because I knew that we had the right strategy. This victory is enormously important for me because I clearly improved in the overall standings and, on top of that, have become the best Volkswagen driver in the Formula 3 Euro Series."

#33 - Mirko Bortolotti (Italien) - Volkswagen Dallara F308 - Team Carlin Motorsport
Qualifying: 16th place - race 1: 17th place - race 2: 3rd place

"That was a really crazy race. Of course I'm more than happy with third place; after all, this was my very first race in the Formula 3 Euro Series. The weekend started with difficulties because I didn't have much time to get used to the car, tyres, team and race track. My thanks go to the Carlin Motorsport squad. The decision to start on slicks was absolutely right."
