F3 Euroseries Hockenheim: Guillaume Moreau had the last word
The last word
Guillaume Moreau finished his first Formula 3 Euro Series season with his best qualifications so far and a stunning second place in Sunday's race. The Signature driver was already in the pace early in the week-end whatever the conditions. On a dry track, he was 3rd fastest in race 2's qualifying session, taking his highest grid position of the year. Mastering the damp in the second session, and he qualified 4th for race 1 despite been the first man at the chequer on a drying track.
Driving an Opel-Spiess powered car, Guillaume was very satisfied to have achieved this in Hockenheim, on Mercedes home ground. But his fist ever second row start was not as good as expected on a rainy Saturday. "Too much revs, wheelspin on the start line; I lost a couple of places and then blocked my front wheels at the first corner. Vettel got alongside but didn't leave me enough room on the inside to turn so we collided. He spun, I broke my wishbones and that was it."
Guillaume got his revenge and was rewarded for his steely determination on Sunday. He made a slightly better start, jumped ahead of Di Grassi, up from his second-row starting position to series Champion Lewis Hamilton's tail. "Lewis is really fast in opening laps, but I did my best to challenge" said the jubilant second. "You have to fight hard if you want to be on the podium in this category, so I pushed harder and harder, especially in the stadium, my favourite sector." 180.000 witnessed his spectacular efforts. Götz tried to close in but made a mistake and Guillaume solidified his position. "I was so close to the limit to chase Lewis, the team thought I would try too hard and spin or something. At half distance, I felt the car was getting more difficult to drive. I had a clear gap over Vettel so I relaxed."
Race winner in Zandvoort, on the podium again in Hockenheim close to "king" Hamilton, Rookie class winner, also leading the Opel field as well as heading the Signature squad, Guillaume Moreau is a strong title favourite for 2006. Before that, he will experience Macao Grand Prix on November 17- 20. A race Signature won in 2003.
