Bruno Spengler will start from 6th place in Zandvoort, Holland
Montreal, Canada, September 19th, 2003 -- St. Hippolyte, Quebec race car driver Bruno Spengler today set the 6th fastest time out of 27 participants in qualifying for Race 2 of the Formula 3 Euro Series event held in Zandvoort in the Netherlands. Driving his Mercedes-Benz powered Dallara, Spengler lapped the Dutch circuit in a time of 1 minute 33.589 seconds, just 0.301 second behind pole sitter Christian Klien of Austria. The 19-year old Canadian lapped the 4.3-kilometre road course at the average speed of 165.404 km/h. For Spengler, it was a huge improvement after he could not do better than a time of 1:34.745 in the practice session held in the morning.
"What happened was that we did not mounted a set of new tires this morning in order to save it for the qualifying session," said the Mercedes-Benz Junior Team works driver. "With my first set of new tires in qualifying, I set the fastest time. I was on pole position. Then, on my second set I was slowed down by traffic and I made one or two small driving mistakes that cost me a few tenths of a second. But managing traffic is part of my job and it is down to me to produce perfect laps."
Spengler knows that his driving has improved since the Formula 3 Master held here in Zandvoort one month ago. "I am not happy with 6th place on the grid but I am satisfied with the progress I made since that event," explained Spengler who last year captured six victories and the title in the North American Fran-Am Pro Series as well as finishing runner-up in the German Formula Renault 2000 Championship. "My best time during the F3 Master was a 1:33.9 and today I did a 1:33.58. Today's times are extremely tight and making just one small driving mistake is very costly. But that's the kind of racing I really enjoy."
Tomorrow will be a busy day for Spengler as he will qualify for Race 1 in the morning and then take the start of Race 1 in the afternoon. Sunday, he will compete in Race 2 in the morning.
