Montreal, Canada, October 26, 2003 -- The final round of the 2003 Formula 3 Euro Series turned to be an eventful race for Canadian race car driver Bruno Spengler -- a member of the famed Mercedes-Benz Junior Team.
Driving his grey Dallara powered by a Mercedes-Benz engine, Spengler took the start of the race in 19th place. "Again, I made a very good start," said Spengler, a two-time French karting champion in 2000. "After just two laps, I was already running in 13th place. The car was really running well. Yesterday, my handling problem was caused by the flat bottom which was broken. But today, the car was fast and I was making good progress through the field."
Moments later, an incident ruined his efforts. "When braking for the Adelaide hairpin corner, someone hit me from behind and spun me around," the 19-year old explained. "I quickly got back into action but a few laps later, I collided with another competitor which knocked off my front wing. I drove into the pits to get it fixed and returned into action, two laps down however."
At the end of the race, Spengler crossed the line in 21th place out of 29 starters. In the final standings, the Canadian ranks in 10th place with 34 points, and lies fourth in the rookie of the year honours despite having missed the first six rounds of the year due to a broken back.
This race concludes Bruno Spengler's maiden season in the European Formula 3 championship. During the next weeks, we will keep you informed with the latest news related to his international career.
