Spengler 5th in F3 race
Hockenheim, Germany, October 5th, 2003 -- A member of the Mercedes-Benz Junior Team, Canadian Bruno Spengler finished fifth today in the second race of the Formula 3 Euro Series held in Hockenheim, Germany -- the stage of the penultimate round of the 2003 F3 championship. Spengler started the race in 7th place and finished ahead of the other two drivers of the French ASM stable.
Rain fell this morning but at the moment of the standing start, the track was still wet at places but the racing line was dry. Spengler, from St. Hippolyte, Quebec made a good start and was sixth at the end of the first lap. He then gained a position on lap 3 when Nico Rosberg was hit from behind by Austrian Christian Klien. On lap 8 of the 18-lap feature, the 19-year old driver brilliantly passed his team mate Alexandre Prémat to take fourth position. Until the end of the race, Spengler, Alexandros Margaritis and Prémat drove wheel to wheel without an inch to spare. On the last lap but one, Spengler made a small driving mistake that allowed Margaritis to move ahead of him for 4th place.
"I had a lot of fun during the 18 laps of that race. There was action all over the place!" said Spengler, last year's Fran-Am 2000 North American champion. "The racing line was dry but there were some pretty wet spots all around the circuit. When I saw Klien hit Rosberg from behind just in front of me, I must admit I was quite happy. Afterwards, the car was working well but I was still having some difficulties in one particular corner. There was some water left on the tarmac and when I passed Alexandre Prémat, I had to accelerate in the wet. During the penultimate lap, I locked up a wheel under braking at the end of the long straightaway and Margaritis managed to slip in front of me. Nevertheless, I am quite happy with my overall performance."
The final round of the 2003 Formula 3 Euro Series will be staged October 24, 25 and 26 in Magny-Cours, France.
